Question
What is the difference between a patient's Patient ID and their Patient number in Jane?
Answer
A Patient ID and a Patient number are two different things, and they don't always match for the same patient. This is normal and expected.
Patient number:
- Appears in the top right corner of the patient's profile page.
- Is searchable in the Patients tab search bar.
Patient ID:
- Appears in the URL of a patient's profile page, in this format:
https://[clinic name].janeapp.com/admin#patients/[Patient ID] - Is not searchable in the Patients tab.
📣 Heads up: Because Patient ID and Patient number do not always match, searching for a patient using their Patient ID will not reliably return the correct profile. If a patient's Patient ID and Patient number happen to be the same value, the search will return a result, but that's because it matched the Patient number, not the Patient ID. If you only have a Patient ID, follow the steps below.
Finding a patient profile using their Patient ID
To open a patient's profile using a Patient ID, select any patient profile and then replace the ID portion of the URL directly: https://[clinic name].janeapp.com/admin#patients/[Patient ID]
Supporting Information
A Patient ID and Patient number can differ for a few reasons:
- Imported patients often receive a new Patient number in Jane, unless the clinic requested to keep the original numbers.
- When two patient profiles are merged, the primary profile that remains keeps one number. Merging (or undoing a merge) can change which number appears.
- Discharged or inactive patients may be hidden from some lists or reports, which can make patient numbers appear out of sync.
- Two staff members creating a profile for the same patient at the same time can result in duplicate or unexpected numbers.
