Breakout Groups for Telehealth

Staff Access Level: All levels

Jane Plan: All plans

Add-On Required: Yes — Group Telehealth ($15 per practitioner per month)

Geography: 🌐 All geographies

Breakout groups let you split participants into smaller groups during a Telehealth session. This is useful for group therapy sessions where you want to give participants time to work in smaller groups before reconvening.

Instructions

  1. Once you've joined the Telehealth session, hover over the People icon in the toolbar.
  2. Click Breakout Groups.
The People icon open during a Telehealth session with Breakout Groups highlighted
  3. In the panel on the right, assign participants to groups using one of the following options:
    • Drag each participant's name into a group manually.
    • Click Auto-assign to have Jane distribute participants automatically.
    • Give participants the option to split themselves into groups.
  4. To rename a breakout group, click on the pre-populated group name and type in the desired name.
  5. When you're ready, start the breakout session.

Breakout Group Settings

To adjust your breakout group settings, click the cogwheel at the bottom of the Breakout Groups panel.

There are four settings you can configure:

  • Participants can choose their own groups — when enabled, participants can select and switch between breakout rooms on their own. This is enabled by default.
  • Automatically move assigned participants into groups after 10 seconds — when enabled, Jane will move participants into their assigned groups automatically after the set time (10 seconds by default). This is disabled by default.
  • Once the breakout session ends, automatically return participants to the main room after 30 seconds — when enabled, participants are automatically returned to the main room after the set time (30 seconds by default). When disabled, participants need to return to the main room on their own. This is disabled by default.
  • Set a timer to end the breakout session — when enabled, the breakout session will end automatically after the set time (30 minutes by default). This is disabled by default.

Click Save after making any changes to your settings.

What to Expect

Participants are moved into their assigned breakout groups and can collaborate separately from the main session. If Participants can choose their own groups is enabled, participants can switch between rooms during the session.

Ending the Breakout Session

  1. Click the End button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Ending the breakout session closes all breakout rooms but does not end the main Telehealth session.

Important Notes

  • When the breakout session ends, participants are either automatically returned to the main room or need to return on their own, depending on your settings.
  • When participants return to the main room, their camera and microphone will be set to off by default.
