What are Cookies?
This is a helpful site that explains what cookies are and how they’re used. Especially notable for Jane is the section on “Why are Cookies Used:”
“… a cookie can simply be used as a means to identify a given user so that further related information can be looked up on a server-side database.”
How does Jane use Cookies?
Jane uses cookies to securely match each user to their profile in your Jane database as they navigate through the online booking process. Jane stores an encrypted token in the cookie, that can only be read by Jane. This token includes a numerical identifier that allows the Jane servers to identify who the user is after they have signed in, or while they are using the online booking.
If your customer cannot enable cookies, for whatever reason, they will need to use a different device or network to use your online booking site.
It’s true that some businesses where your customers work will be heavily fire-walled and have security settings restricting cookies. Ironically, they block them for the very reason we need them (because it lets the Jane server know who you are). But the Jane uses cookies poses no security threat to your customer. It’ s actually the industry accepted best practice to securely identify that the person accessing your site is the same person that signed in using a username and password. Cookies can only be read by the server that assigned them. No other server can read the cookie that Jane set, and Jane cannot read any cookies that were set by other website. It’s a bit of a funny concept to explain.
What are your customers seeing?
If your customer’s web browser does not allow cookies, they will see the following message:
