Every year, CMS updates the ICD-10 diagnosis code set. These yearly updates typically take effect on October 1st, and include additions of new billable codes, revisions of code descriptions, and the deletion of codes that are no longer valid or needed.
This guide covers some common questions on how the ICD-10 code set is updated within your Jane account.
Will this affect my Custom Diagnosis Codes?
No. When we update the ICD-10 code set, custom diagnosis codes (including favorited codes) are not affected.
If you have favorited a diagnosis code that has since been discontinued by CMS, that code will remain favorited in your account. If you no longer want this code to show as an option when adding diagnosis codes to appointments, you can unfavorite the code in Settings > Billing Codes.
Will deprecated diagnosis codes be removed from my past appointments?
No. When we update the ICD-10 library, we only remove deprecated diagnosis codes from the library. Past, present and future appointments that already have codes attached will not be affected by code set updates.
What if I need to add a deprecated diagnosis code to an encounter prior to October 1st?
If you need to add a diagnosis code that was deprecated in a CMS update to a date of service that took place prior to October 1st, you’ll need to temporarily create a custom diagnosis code in Settings > Billing Codes. Once you’ve created it, you’ll be able to add that code to past appointments as needed. It’s a good idea to delete that code in Settings > Billing Codes once you’re done so you don’t accidentally add it to dates of service that occur after October 1st.

Does Jane prevent or block claims with deprecated diagnosis codes from being submitted?
Jane allows you to submit any diagnosis code (library or custom) even if that code has been deprecated in a CMS update, or isn’t recognized by CMS. That said, your clearinghouse might block the claim.
If I copy a previous visit’s insurance information from a date of service prior to October 1st, will deprecated diagnosis codes be pulled forward?
Yes, so it’s important to double check diagnosis codes if copy previous insurance information.
